Objectivity as Ideology: Unmasking the Power Structures Behind Scientific Authority
In the popular imagination, science occupies a privileged position above the fray of politics. It is imagined as a self-correcting enterprise governed by logic and evidence, insulated from the distortions of ideology, interest, and power. This image is not simply naive — it is, in the precise sense that critical theorists use the term, ideological. It obscures the material and social conditions under which scientific knowledge is produced, legitimated, and disseminated, and in doing so, it reproduces existing hierarchies under the banner of universal truth.
The question this article pursues is not whether science produces useful knowledge — it plainly does — but rather how the claim to neutrality functions as a political act, and what critical theory offers us for thinking more honestly about the relationship between knowledge and power.
The Myth of the View from Nowhere
Philosopher Thomas Nagel famously described objectivity as "the view from nowhere" — a perspective detached from any particular position, interest, or embodied standpoint. Feminist epistemologists, most notably Sandra Harding and Donna Haraway, spent decades dismantling this fantasy. Harding's concept of standpoint epistemology insists that all knowledge is produced from somewhere, by someone, under specific material conditions. Haraway's demand for "situated knowledges" similarly argues that the pretense of a god's-eye view does not eliminate bias; it merely renders bias invisible and therefore unaccountable.
This insight has profound implications for how we evaluate scientific institutions. When the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, or a prominent research university declares its findings to be simply "what the evidence shows," it performs a kind of epistemological laundering — stripping away the institutional, financial, and social conditions that shaped which questions were funded, which populations were studied, and which methodological frameworks were considered legitimate in the first place.
Follow the Funding: Political Economy and Research Agendas
The critical tradition has always insisted on tracing ideas back to their material conditions of production. Applied to science, this means asking a deceptively simple question: who pays for research, and what do they expect in return?
The pharmaceutical industry's relationship with academic medicine in the United States offers a clarifying case. Scholars including Marcia Angell, former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, have documented how industry funding shapes not merely which drugs get studied but how trials are designed, how results are reported, and which outcomes are foregrounded in publications. This is not a matter of individual dishonesty; it is a structural dynamic in which the financial interests of capital are embedded in the very architecture of knowledge production.
The same logic extends to fossil fuel interests funding climate skepticism, agribusiness shaping nutritional science, and defense contractors underwriting engineering research. In each case, the claim to objectivity serves to naturalize what are, in fact, politically consequential choices about what counts as a problem worth solving and for whom.
Foucault's concept of power/knowledge is instructive here. For Foucault, power does not simply suppress or distort knowledge from the outside; it actively produces knowledge in ways that reinforce existing relations of domination. Scientific authority, in this reading, is not merely a resource that powerful actors exploit — it is itself a product of power, constituted through the institutions, disciplines, and discursive norms that determine what can be said, by whom, and with what legitimacy.
Whose Bodies, Whose Questions?
The politics of scientific knowledge are not only economic. They are also racial, gendered, and colonial. The history of American medicine is inseparable from the history of race: from the unconsented experimentation on enslaved Black bodies by figures like J. Marion Sims to the Tuskegee syphilis study, the bodies of marginalized communities have historically been instrumentalized in the production of knowledge that primarily served white, affluent populations.
Contemporary critical race scholars, including Dorothy Roberts and Harriet Washington, have extended this analysis to show how racialized assumptions continue to shape medical research and clinical practice. The persistent myth of biological race differences in pain tolerance, for instance, has been shown to influence how Black patients are treated in emergency medicine — a direct and deadly consequence of the ideological work performed by claims to scientific neutrality.
Similarly, feminist science studies scholars have documented the long history of androcentrism in biomedical research, from the exclusion of women from clinical trials — justified on grounds of methodological efficiency — to the systematic underfunding of conditions that disproportionately affect women. The NIH only mandated the inclusion of women in federally funded research in 1993. The "objective" science that preceded that mandate was, in fact, science conducted primarily on male bodies and generalized to all.
Popular Science Media and the Performance of Neutrality
The ideological work of scientific neutrality is not confined to academic institutions. It is actively reproduced in the popular science media ecosystem — from outlets like Scientific American and STAT News to science-inflected podcasts and social media accounts that traffic in the authority of data and expertise.
The conventions of science journalism in the United States tend to reproduce what media scholars call the "view from nowhere" — a presentational style that brackets the journalist's perspective in favor of a seemingly neutral relay of expert opinion. Yet the choices embedded in this style are thoroughly political: which experts are quoted, which controversies are treated as settled and which as open, which communities are positioned as objects of study rather than producers of knowledge.
The genre of "science communication" has itself become a site of contested authority. Movements for community-based participatory research, Indigenous data sovereignty, and citizen science represent challenges not merely to the content of scientific knowledge but to its social relations of production — to the question of who gets to ask questions, design studies, and interpret findings.
Toward a More Honest Science
None of this amounts to a rejection of scientific inquiry. The critical theory tradition, at its most rigorous, is not anti-empirical; it is anti-ideological. The goal is not to replace scientific knowledge with something else but to subject the conditions of its production to the same scrutiny we would apply to any other social institution.
Paradoxically, acknowledging science's political entanglements may be the most effective way to strengthen its democratic legitimacy. A scientific community that openly accounts for its funding structures, interrogates its sampling practices, actively recruits marginalized voices into its epistemic community, and acknowledges the historical conditions of its knowledge production is a more credible institution than one that insists on an impossible neutrality.
Philosopher Helen Longino's concept of social objectivity offers a useful reframe: objectivity is not achieved by eliminating perspective but by subjecting diverse perspectives to rigorous critical scrutiny within genuinely inclusive communities of inquiry. This is a democratic, rather than technocratic, vision of scientific authority — one that takes power seriously precisely because it takes knowledge seriously.
The neutrality trap is seductive because it promises to place science above the mess of politics. Critical theory's contribution is to show that this promise is not only unfulfillable but actively harmful — that the pretense of neutrality forecloses the accountability that genuine credibility requires. Mapping that terrain is not an assault on science. It is, arguably, the most scientifically honest thing we can do.
